Context

Flipboard APP & User Flow

Flipboard app is an RSS platform that allows users to collect and share news articles from diverse publication sources, creating personalized magazines to catch up on news and stories shared by others.

Empathize

Synthesize survey results, categorizing Flipboard users into four primary persona

I send out the survey to 20 people, understanding their general purposes of using Flipboard app in daily life, what features they usually interact with, and any inconvenience and advantages they’ve found in the app.

Motivation & Goals of Four User Groups

1

Search Specific Topics and Related Articles

2

Find Certain Articles & Flip into Magazines

3

Retrieve and Refer to Contents Frequently

Focus on “Research and Plan” because they usually follow consistent flow and apparent pain points while using Flipboard app.

User Journey for “Research and Plan”

Define

Heuristic Evaluation to Identify Main Issues needed to be Optimized during Search and Retrieve Content

In the information architecture of Flipboard app, I conducted heuristic evaluation in two sections mainly: searching process and results in “Explore” page, and curating and organizing content in “Magazine” page.

User control and freedom

Users cannot search specific articles and topics precisely and quickly

When searching the title of a certain article, search results only show topics, sources, magazines, and profiles. Users lack the ability to control their content discovery process, reducing efficiency.

Recognition rather than recall

After flipping many articles into personalized magazines, it’s hard to retrieve articles back

One curated magazine usually has lots of articles from different sources, but articles are listed without order and search feature, making it harder to find the certain content back.

Recognize, diagnose, and recover from errors

Users feel difficult searching articles only based on their  headlines and topic tag

An article tends to include various topics, but preview page only show one topic tag and simple headline, causing users trouble to categorize it into their curated magazine.

User Needs

Users need search bars and filters to search specific article for efficiency. Also, they hope to narrow down search results and retrieve needed articles among large numbers of content in magazines.

Users need to clearly see what subtopic tags are included in an article, so they can more intuitively decide which magazine they should flip it into.

Ideate & Prototype

Redesign Search and Filter Features in Flipboard to ensure efficiency and convenience when retrieving content

Additional Tab to Search “Topic-related Articles” in Explore Page

Original search results often show inaccurate topics, sources, and magazines. A new tab “Articles” and “See more related articles” option can help users get more relevant content.

Related Articles are sorted by:
Most Related, Popularity, and Latest

Directly Search or Filter Specific “Article Title” and Information

Initially, users feel difficult retrieve certain articles back if they are not flipped into magazine.
The feature to directly search specific article can prioritize previously read articles based on past 90 days browsing history.

Search options in Filter include: Title, Source / Author, Publish Date, and Topic Tags

Search “Article” in Magazine Page

Search and filter features help users retrieve specific article and organize great numbers of information more quickly and intuitively.

Add “Topic” and “AI-summarized Subtopics” below articles

AI-summarized subtopics refer to other related key points (#Topic) in the article besides its overarching topic.

Filter certain articles in magazine and arrange the order by topics

For users who research and plan in Flipboard, filter features like multi-selections and editing topics order can help them more easily organize content they have collected.

Highlight certain paragraphs with notes and categorize them by topics
